In this comprehensive guide, the focus will be on five essential Silat techniques tailored specifically for beginners, drawing upon the expertise of Pertubuhan Seni Gayung Fatani Malaysia (PSGFM), a renowned institution in Malay Silat (Anuar, 2002;2007; Shapie et al., 2015; 2016; 2022a; Shapie & Elias, 2015; Shapie, 2021).

The Importance of Learning Basic Techniques:
Before delving into advanced manoeuvres, mastering basic techniques is paramount for beginners. These foundational skills help cultivate proper form, coordination, and timing, essential for progressing in Silat practice and building a strong martial arts foundation. By focusing on mastering the basics, beginners can develop a solid understanding of Silat’s principles and lay the groundwork for more advanced techniques as they progress in their training journey (Shapie et al., 2022b).

Technique 1: Stance and Footwork:
A sturdy stance and agile footwork are the bedrock of PSGFM’s Silat practice. Beginners should focus on mastering basic footwork patterns such as the triangular step and pendulum step to enhance stability, mobility, and effective manoeuvring in combat situations. PSGFM emphasises the importance of maintaining a balanced stance with knees slightly bent, allowing for quick transitions between offensive and defensive movements (Anuar, 1992; Shapie et al., 2016). By practising stance and footwork drills regularly, beginners can develop agility, coordination, and spatial awareness, essential for effective Silat practice (Shapie et al., 2022b).

Punches and strikes are fundamental offensive techniques in Silat. Beginners should hone their skills in executing straight punches, hook punches, and palm strikes, paying close attention to hip rotation and hand positioning for maximum impact and efficiency (Shapie et al., 2013a). PSGFM emphasises the use of leverage and control in executing joint locks and takedowns, with practitioners encouraged to flow seamlessly between offensive and defensive techniques. By practising joint lock and takedown drills with a partner, beginners can develop sensitivity, timing, and control, essential for manipulating opponents and gaining dominant positions in Silat (Shapie et al., 2016).

Over the years, PSGFM has amassed numerous achievements, including victories in the National Silat Championship and participation in international events showcasing the world’s best self-defence practices. PSGFM has also been recognised globally, receiving awards such as the Best Sport Organisation of the Year in the Asia Sports Industry Awards and invitations to prestigious events like the World Congress of Malay Heritage. Additionally, PSGFM has contributed significantly to the development of Malay Silat, publishing martial arts literature, conducting scientific studies, and hosting international conferences (Cynarski, 2021; Pewelec et al., 2015; Pawel et al., 2022).
